This is a conceptual design for a cultural center in Austin that draws inspiration from both curvilinear and orthogonal forms. Influenced by the National Music Centre of Canada's materiality and tower design, combined with Midjourney exploration, the final form blends these references into a single expression. Facing west, with neighboring buildings to the north and south, the cross-hatching facade acts as a light-filtering screen, blocking views of adjacent buildings while allowing light to enter from above. A key design element is the separation between the interior structure and the outer facade, allowing the facade to rest directly on the inner structure.

Concept

The site is long and narrow, situated between two larger buildings. The form, inspired by Midjourney iterations, bends and warps around the interior spaces of the cultural center to establish a distinct identity. The copper façade represents change over time. Just as culture and art reflect their era, the material oxidizes and evolves as it ages.

Approach

The first floor serves as the main entrance from the street, with a lobby and office area connected to a shared valet and drive-through. This setup provides convenient access for VIPs, staff, and performers to both the main and rear service entrances. The structure incorporates an "I-beam" elevation, allowing the base-level walls to bear most of the structural load. Two central cores act as the primary structural elements, anchoring and connecting the multiple levels of the building.
