// Redirection
2024 | Advanced Studio: Martin + Meyer | Urban Design, Landscape
This project focused on a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) campus in Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, NY. The primary objective is to redesign the landscape to provide adequate resistance for flooding from cloudburst conditions. The opportunity in this project was to incorporate amenities that would be beneficial for the existing NYCHA campus through the landscape interventions that are offered. I focused on one of the four superblocks, mapping flood zones and stormwater paths.
Concept
Research has revealed that long-term disinvestment in urban housing has led to structural and aesthetic decline of the campus and significant resident isolation. In this “tower in the park” model, the expansive green spaces that are meant to be communal are often fenced off, discouraging integration with the surrounding neighborhood. This project aims to break down superblocks and increase foot traffic by introducing large communal amenities accessible to the entire community.
Approach
I used ArcGIS Pro to create hydrology maps and analyze existing stormwater pathways and their impact on the community. Based on this analysis, I identified key sites for intervention where water could be pooled to reduce runoff effects on both the campus and surrounding neighborhoods. I also introduced a central community center to serve as a learning center, and an elevated emergency shelter with indoor amenities.
